"Westerners say why do they wear a burkha or hijab?"

Afghanistan is infamous for the Burkha. The loose garment that completely covers the woman's body and face in a meshed veil.

How does a society that values this garment as proper dress view a woman's right to say an education, or even to go outside unaccompanied?

The following are some interviews conducted in Nuristan, a particularly rural and conservative province in the far Northeast of Afghanistan.

Jim,

This was very interesting. What a difference it makes to hear directly from those living with these "laws." Reminds me of being a young school girl when we had to have our heads covered in church. Being uncovered didn't change us. Hope that this culture can progress for the sake of the women.
Thanks for bringing us so much insight.

I have to agree with the interpreter.

1.) education
2.) culture
3.) war-torn country

are the reasons why it is so prevalent. afghanistan relishes its remoteness, i believe. kinda like california. so they have cultivated a state of mind and a cultural emission, and to some people it's very ugly, but some people find it a relief as well. as in a person from indiana thinks that people in california are fruity and people from the east coast flakey (or vice versa?).
